A fortress above the Adriatic
Stone walls, Frankopan history and one of Rijeka’s defining panoramas — Trsat Castle is the city seen from above.
Where Rijeka opens to the sea
Trsat Castle rises on a steep hill above the Rječina gorge, looking across Rijeka and the Kvarner. Long before today’s walls, the site served as a strategic lookout; in the Middle Ages it became a fortified seat tied to the Frankopan family.
The castle you experience today is part medieval stronghold, part nineteenth-century reinvention. Its courtyards, towers and the “Mir junaka” mausoleum turn a short visit into a layered walk through Rijeka’s history.
